Bill Offers Remediation Before College  E-mail

Students who fall behind in high school will have to brush up their skills if they want state financial aid to attend college under a bill passed Thursday by the General Assembly’s House Education Committee.
It aims to reduce the number of students who start college in remedial classes, directing them into free programs sponsored by the state.
The New Albany Republican who authored the bill says it's meant to address the problem of student readiness, saying way to many Hoosier college students arrive for college level classes needing remediation.
The biggest concern for some is that the bill could create the equivalent of a third state test for struggling students by requiring the placement exam.
